Clearance Letters

A Clearance Letter is a document issued to individuals who at one time possessed a Nebraska Driverís License and are now making application for a license in another state and have either have lost their Nebraska issued Driverís License or have been asked to provide verification that the Nebraska Driverís License was in a valid status.

To obtain a Nebraska Clearance Letter, you must submit a signed, written request to the Nebraska DMV. The request must include the following:

  • Full name (as it appears on the Nebraska Driverís License);
  • Date of Birth;
  • Drivers License Number, or;
  • Social Security Number;
  • Current out-of-state mailing address.

The request must include a check or money order in the amount of $3.00, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Requests should be mailed to:

Clearance Letters are generally processed and mailed back to the requestor within 2 days of receipt. If you wish the Clearance Letter to be faxed as well, you must state this in your written request and provide the name of the individual to receive the fax and an accurate fax number.
