Driver License Renewals
The Department of Motor Vehicles sends renewal notices to all individuals 90 days prior to the expiration of their current operator’s license, commercial driver’s license or state identification card. Please review the preprinted information and answer all appropriate questions before taking the renewal notice to the exam station when you go to renew your license or ID cards.
DO NOT MAIL THE RENEWAL NOTICE IN TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES; YOU HAVE TO APPEAR IN PERSON AT THE EXAM STATION TO RENEW YOUR LICENSE AND/OR ID CARD.
Individuals who cannot present a renewal notice (either did not receive one in the mail or have misplaced it) will be required to complete a DMV Operators License-ID data form or Commercial Drivers License data form. You may download this form from this website and complete it and take it with you to the exam station or fill one out at the exam station. Once all requirements have been met, a DMV Issuance Certificate will be issued and must be reviewed and signed by the applicant affirming the information furnished.
Nebraska licensed drivers that are out of the state during their renewal period, may apply for renewal, prior to expiration or within one year after expiration of their operators license by mail. You cannot renew a Commercial Driver’s License by mail or an Identification Card.
To make application, you will be required to complete a DMV Operators License Out of State Renewal data form, complete vision testing requirements and include a copy of your current driver’s license or Nebraska approved identification. Please include your out of state address, telephone number and/or fax number. Mail this information to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, PO Box 94726, Lincoln, NE 68509 or fax to 402-471-4020. An issuance certificate will then be sent to you. You will be required to sign it, attach the appropriate fee and return it to the Lincoln office. Once payment is received, your renewed Nebraska driver’s license will be mailed to the address you have provided. This renewal license will not have a photograph, unless you have a digital image photo on file.
Per Nebraska Statute 60-4,120.(5), an individual without a photograph shall surrender the license to the county treasurer within thirty days after resuming residency in this state. Upon surrendering license and paying a fee of $11.00, the person will be issued a license with a color photograph.
Nebraska licensed drivers; 21 years and older, who know they will be out of the state during their renewal period, may apply for renewal of their license (operator's or commercial) prior to their leaving the state. They may be asked to provide proof that they will not be in the state during renewal period, and all standard testing requirements would be followed for their renewal. Contact the Driver Licensing Services main office for details.
There are special driver’s licensing rules if you are on active duty in the military and stationed outside of Nebraska as well as renewing in person upon your return to Nebraska. These rules also apply to family members of active duty military personnel. Click on this link for complete information about this process: Military Renewals
